June 5, 2004 – Ontario’s Gears Racing Team stole the show today, claiming
four of the top five places in the men’s race and two of the top five in
the women’s competition.

Andrew Watson (Gears Racing) “felt awesome.” He played it safe early on,
and let Andrew Kyle (Sugoi) go hard off the front. Watson caught Kyle on
the second lap of four and they rode together for a while until Watson got
away. “Everything just clicked,” said Watson with a grin.

Kyle, who amitted maybe he went out a little too hard at the start,
started fading on the last lap, giving Greg Reain (Gears Racing) and
opening. Reain, who had local course knowledge on his side, gunned it and
crossed the line in second place, only 20 seconds ahead of Kyle and 35
seconds back from the winner.

In the women’s race, Sue Trimble (Gears Racing) took her first Canada Cup
victory, which was made sweeter because it was on home Ontario soil. She
had a slow start, she said, but the course’s fun, twisty singletrack,
smooth flat sections and short power climbs had her name written all over
them. Mical Dyck (Terrascape) who already had two podium finishes in the
first couple of Canada Cup races, showed strength and consistancy when she
placed second this afternoon. Sarah Noble (Rocky Mountain/Business Objects)
had a super fast start, taking the lead on the first lap, but she suffered
from stomach cramps and fell back as the race wore on. However, she
managed to hang in and hold on to third place.

In the junior men’s race, Raphael Gagne (Equipe du Quebec) continued his
series domination, making it three in a row, well ahead of second place,
Alex Fortier (Equipe du Quebec). Jean-Nicolas Lavertu (Equipe du Quebec)
capped off the top three in third.

Emily Batty (Bay Cycle/3 Rox) also made it a Canada Cup hat trick,
finishing the two laps less than two minutes faster than second place,
Olivia Gagne (Equipe du Quebec). Manitoba’s Kylie Case (MCA/VW Kal Tire)
was third.
