May 20, 2006 (Bromont, Quebec) – Despite the pouring rain and the cold weather, hundreds of cyclists challenge Mont Brome at round #1 of the Canada MTB Cup and Quebec Cup of cross-country mountain biking. Here are the results from the most spectacular and popular races of the day.

In the men’s Senior Elite category (19-29 years old), nothing could come in the way of Max Plaxton (Rocky Mountain/Business Objects) as he finished first with a time of 1:46. After winning, he only made one comment, “Is that it?”. Plaxton was followed by Ricky Federeau of Team R.A.C.E. while third went to Plaxton’s teammate 19-year-old Raphaël Gagné at 1:52. It was Gagné’s first race in this category and he finished just in front of Neal Kindree (Kona) and Micheal Garrigan (Hardwood Hills).

In the women’s Senior Elite category (19-29 years), Mical Dyck (Terrascape Racing Racing/Trek) won with an astonishing time of 1:49.6 just edging out Karen DeWolf (Cannondale) in second by a mere 23 hundredths of a second. Third place went to Catherine Pendrel (Norco Factory Team) with a time of 1:50.8.

Finally, in the men’s Junior Expert category, it’s no surprise that Alex Harvey of team Devinci won the title with an excellent time of 1:39 minutes, 6 minutes ahead of his closest rival Andrew Thomas (Duteh Cycle/Lumsoen Bike Club). The Harvey family will have something to celebrate tonight as Alex’s two sisters, Laurence and Sophie Harvey, also stepped on the podium today in first and second in the women’s Junior Expert category. Third place went to Jon Kinsie (Arrow Racing) with a time fo 1:50.

The talented Marie-Claude Surprenant almost made the podium, finishing fourth in the Junior Expert (women) category. Several other athletes from the region such as Francis Morin, Georges-Édouard Duquette and Mathilde Hupin Debeurme also did well, but did not medal.

Tomorrow on Sunday, May 21, the downhill riders take to the hill. The Canada Cup C2 and Quebec Cup level downhill race starts at 9:00 am, and is presented by RockShox.

Beginning at 10:00 am is the 12h Enduro Hydrapak, an endurance competition where cyclists will once again have to endure the bad weather and the well-used trail which has been rolled on by riders all day today.
