May 20, 2007 – The rain held off long enough to get an entire day’s racing done at the first Canada DH Cup of the year at Bromont, Quebec. Normally held under adverse conditions, the course had managed to dry slightly over night, turning soupy mud into peanut butter in areas. The rest of the course tacked up nicely and riders were able to really let it hang out as they came down a course that saw huge craters form over the weekend.. The day was to be dominated by the youngsters, as an up-ranked Junior and a first year senior took home the wins and the big money.

The women’s fields, both Junior and Elite, were less dynamic as only two Junior women took to the course, with Miranda Miller (Marin) coming out on top over Anne Laplante. The Senior field had 10 riders, however many of the best in the country were notable by their absence leaving the door wide open. Junior world championship medalist Micayla Gatto (Rocky Mountain-Haywood), in her first senior race, took the win. Gatto ran a 5:25.774 beating second place finisher Marie-Eve Marcotte by 25 seconds.

Gatto commented on the roughness of the course after the race. “My run was alright, a lot of pedaling. It was definitely hard on my body. The course was totally wrecked since I walked it but it changed a lot. It was so smooth and so nice when I walked it I was very excited for the race. When I raced it oh man, it was a lot different.”

The Junior Men’s event was dominated by Australian National Champion Mitch Delfs, who is in the country racing for the DH Iron horse Intersport team this year.

The Elite Men’s field took to the mountain last, under tumbling temperatures, and flat light and ominous skies. Mother Nature spared them however, and the rain held until the podium presentations. Junior rider Steve Smith (Cove) took the win convincingly by almost 6 seconds (4:22.922) after a long stay in the hot seat. Justin Brown (Cycle Solutions) took second in what was his best Canada Cup performance as an Elite rider as well. American Morewood Bikes rider, Gerrit Beytagh, rounded out the top three.

Favorites and past winners Eric Goss (Giant), Luke Kitzanuk (Giant) and Geoff Pendrel (Devinci Pink Bike) all had crashes or mechanicals, keeping them off of the podium. Pendrel tore a cassette off the carrier in the gate and had to come up with a quick fix comprised of zipties and torn down course tape.

Steve Smith kept it short and sweet when asked about his run, the conditions and his first Elite podium. “It went good. It was super gnarly, lots of mud lots of rocks. I was very happy it didn’t rain,” he commented.
