May 19, 2007 — The pre-race favourites in the Elite Men’s and Women’s races have won the second installment of the Canada MTB Cup XC series today in Bromont, Que. Max Plaxton (BC, Rocky Mountain-Haywood) and Marie-Hélène Prémont (QC, Rocky Mountain-Haywood) both took off early from their respective fields and built their leads throughout the race.

Raphaël Gagné (QC, Rocky Mountain-Haywood) held second place for most of the Elite Men’s race, but a storming Mathieu Toulouse (QC, Maxxis) steadily moved up from his initial fifth place to pass Gagné in the fourth lap. In the end, Toulouse held second spot and Gagné had to settle for third.

In the Elite Women’s race, Catharine Pendrel (BC, Norco) led the chase on Prémont on her own through the entire five laps. The contest for third place was much more interesting, with three-time Canada Cup winner Mical Dyck (AB, Terrascape-Trek) holding the position until Amanda Sin (ON, Scott-3 Rox Racing) took over the bronze medal spot in the third lap and defended it through to the end.

In the Junior Men’s race, Francis Morin (QC, Devinci) took the win, followed by Jonathan Boucher (QC, Opus-OGC) in second place.

The Junior Women’s race saw a repeat winner. Andreanne Pichette (QC, Opus-OGC) won the season opener in Baie St-Paul last weekend and took top honours again today.

Race conditions were cool with partly overcast skies. The course had been quite slick and muddy earlier in the week, but had had a chance to dry out a little, making the six-kilometre singletrack rich route more ideal for riding.
