Canada MTB Cup #1 – DH Elite/Junior Men, Women – Report, Full Results and Photos

May 18, 2007 (Bromont, QC) — The first Canada MTB Cup of the 2008 season was the test run for the new MTB World Cup track in Bromont, Quebec which will be host to the world’s best from August 2-3. In Bromont Gerrit Beytagh (USA, Morewood Bikes) and Micayla Gatto (Can, Commencal/Oakley) took home top honors. Favourite, Steve Smith (Can, Cove/Redbull) was having a blazing run until he crashed about 500m from the finish line after flying off of a small step down on the course and took the silver. Charles-Alexandre Dube (Can, DH Racer) was third.

“I was having the run of my life, I went really gnarly through the rock section and I was going really fast until I crashed and hit the dirt really hard with my head. It sucked.” Smith still managed to be only two seconds behind Beytagh the winner, despite his crash that sapped up 8-10 seconds and gave him a decent headache. “It’s getting really old giving interviews after I crash,” added Smith.

The course in Bromont is a mixture of hard pack established trails up top, fresh cut, loamy singletrack and a well designed super steep technical section right under the lift mid-course. It was a fan favorite, with hundreds of spectators lining these technical sections during the elite race runs.

Gatto had another great day, once again dominating the Canadian women’s field with 9-second winning margin over newcomer Danice Uyesugi (Can, Pinkbike). Kim Huard (Can) returned to the race scene after a long hiatus and took third place. “This is easily the best course in Canada,” said Gatto after her run.
