July 18, 2007 (Mt. Washington, BC) – The final round of the Canada DH Cup series takes place today at Mt. Washington resort on Vancouver Island with the 2007 National Downhill Championships on Friday, July 20.
The track at Mt. Washington is 1.6km long and drops just over 480 meters of elevation over its length. It’s comprised mostly of wide technical double-track, allowing riders a multitude of line choices over the near constant rocks and roots here.
The weather call is for sun with a possibility of showers for the rest of the week and weekend. If the course gets damp it will speed up exponentially as the loose corners tack up and allow riders to trust their tires more.
With two spots left up for grabs on the national team for the men for the DH Worlds, the National DH Championships on Friday is for all of the marbles, as any of the top five riders could earn themselves a trip to Scotland. The men’s favorites include Luke Kitzanuk (Giant), Dom Menard (Giant), Geoff Pendrel (Pinkbike/Devinci), Jeff Beatty (Orange Mojo), Tyler Morland (Cove) and Steve Smith (Cove).
On the women’s side, Claire Buchar (Specialized), Micayla Gatto (Rocky Mountain/Haywood) and local rider Adrienne Miller (Devinci) are the top contenders.
“The course is really dry, the first half is a little muddy from the snow melting, the other half is really, really dusty. It’s basically roots all the way down. Old School. It’s going to be really close times if it stays dry,” commented Menard.
