August 3, 2003 ( Calgary, Alberta) – The Canada Cup downhill in Calgary used a different format than usual. Riders got two chances to get it right – two runs of which only the single fastest time mattered. Normally, it's a one-shot deal.
Another difference was the course length – just over one kilometre – very short as far as downhill courses go. However, second-place Elite Woman, Deb MacKillop (Norco) was impressed with the course. The organizers did a great job with the available terrain, she said. The course did quite a bit of traversing across the slope to maximize the distance, which required a lot of leg-searing pedalling.
Times were tight and Hugo Donais (Norco) edged out teammate Mike Jones (Norco) by barely over one-tenth of a second in the Elite Men's race. Danika Schroeter (Simon's Bike Shop) took first in the Elite Women's competition and Sean Brown (Intense) stole the fame and the glory from the rest of the Junior Expert Men's field.
