May 30, 2004 (Mt. Tremblant, Quebec) — All the racers agreed that the
second course on the Canada Cup DH circuit was a physically demanding one
because of its long duration (over four minutes) and prolonged sections
that required intense pedaling. Despite the toll the route took on riders,
most of them said it was a blast. Spectators got front-row seats for the
action, and were able to sit at the bottom, sip a latté in the sunshine and
watch competitors rip across the ski hill.
Mike Jones (Norco Factory Team), who was second in the elite men’s event,
said the course dried up considerably over the past couple of days, making
it much faster. However, there were still some boggy sections to look out
for. Eric Goss (Giant) roared down the hill faster than anyone else today,
stopping the clock at four minutes, 23 seconds. His seven-second margin
over Jones was relatively large, considering Mathieu Laurin (Iron Horse)
squeaked into third, only a second slower than Jones’s four minutes, 30
seconds.
Danika Schroeter (Giant) pulled a double-header and won again today after
winning at Bromont last weekend. She was nine seconds faster than Deb
MacKillop (Evolution Bikes), who snagged second. Janelle Cassidy (Cove
Bikes/Sombrio) took third.
Second at Canada Cup #1 in Bromont, Guillaume Soucy-Alarie (Privateer
Racing) laid it all down on the course today and grabbed the win by only
one second over last week’s winner, Justin Brown (Primary). Connor MacLeod
(Cove Bikes/Sombrio) was third.
