August 6, 2002 – Racers were greeted by a heavy sky at the start line,threatening toturn the 7.5-kilometre course into a mudbath. But the rain held off andthe course remained loose and dry as it had been all week for training.
Ricky Federau (Gearsracing.com) was all smiles when he crossed the lineover two minutes ahead of everyone else in the pro/elite men’s race. Hetook the final race, but Bill Hurley (West Quebec Wheelers) still hadenough points to take the series.
Just back from her fifth place finish at the Commonwealth Games inManchester, England, Kiara Bisaro (Gearsracing.com) made it anotherGearsracing.com victory. She won the women’s race and took the CanadaCup title all in one shot, securing her berth on the 2002 WorldChampionship team.
This year’s junior expert national champion, Max Plaxton (Club CyclistAguilas) kept up his winning streak and managed to edge out seriesleader, Frederic Bussieres (Gearsracing.com) by just over 30 seconds.But Bussiere’s early season Canada Cup domination secured him theoverall title with the maximum 400 points.
Sophie-Anne Blanchette (Sobe/Cannondale) won the junior women’s final,but it wasn’t enough to beat out Jean Ann McKirdy (Rocky Mountain Bikes)for the coveted red and yellow Canada Cup champion’s jersey.
