July 4, 2004 (Calgary, Alta.) – Despite heavy rain showers on Friday night, July 2nd, Saturday looked promising for the cross-country race, round #6 of the World Cup series. The first 5.5-kilometre loop of five was slick and wet for the 11 a.m. women’s start, but things dried up as the race wore on. Nothing could hold Gunn-Rita Dahle (NOR, Multivan-Merida) back as she stormed through her five laps in 1:46:28, 46 seconds ahead of second place Mary McConnelaug (USA, Seven Cycles). Italy’s Annabella Stropparo (ITA, AS Sperafico Olimpus) grabbed third.

Canada’s own Marie-Helene Premont (CAN, Rocky Mountain/Business Objects) finished a strong fourth and all but secured her Olympic Team spot. Alison Sydor (Rocky Mountain/Business Objects), whose Olympic spot was certain after she medalled at the 2003 World Championships, placed 8th. Kiara Bisaro (Gears Racing) got the result she needed when she placed 14th, ahead of Chrissy Redden (Subaru/Gary Fisher). Bisaro is a definite favourite for the Canadian Olympic Team.
