CAAWS Job Opportunity – Marketing and Project Manager, Maternity Leave Replacement
CAAWS is seeking a skilled and highly motivated individual to fill the maternity leave position of Marketing and Project Manager. This is a full time position, headquartered at the National Office in Ottawa. The Marketing and Project Manager reports to the Executive Director. The key areas of responsibility for this position include marketing and partnership development, project management of the VIEWS and Mothers In Motion programs, promotion and coordination of various CAAWS awards programs, involvement in Team Spirit Aboriginal Girls in Sport and Physical Activity initiatives, Board member relations and general duties related to association management.

On the Move Workshops – Call for Host Communities
On the Move is CAAWS’ national initiative to increase opportunities for inactive girls and young women (ages 9-18) to participate in sport and physical activity. On the Move Workshops are half-day, interactive, issue-based sessions that provide an overview of the initiative, share best practices from across Canada, and provide “how-to” tips to increase the participation of girls and young women. Appropriate for everyone from practitioners to policy makers, the workshops also provide an opportunity for participants to network and discuss collaboration and local action to make a difference in the lives of girls and young women in their community.
With funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada, CAAWS will coordinate a number of On the Move workshops across Canada in 2008.

Call for Youth Leadership Facilitators for CAAWS workshops
In response to public demand for leadership workshops targeted to a younger audience, CAAWS has recently developed a youth leadership workshop designed for girls and young women (ages 15-20) who are involved in sport, recreation and physical activity as athletes, coaches, volunteers and hope to continue to contribute to sport in their future career or through volunteer activities. CAAWS has made the initial investment in the leadership program by developing the content and piloting the sessions and is now seeking qualified individuals to be trained as ‘Youth Leadership Facilitators’ (YLFs). Each YLF selected will receive comprehensive training in the delivery of the youth leadership workshop and will subsequently be required to deliver the workshop to the target audience in her own community.

CAAWS, AthletesCAN and CCES work together on Sport Canada-funded transitioning/transitioned athletes project
CAAWS, in partnership with AthletesCAN and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) will work together on a Sport Canada-funded project entitled Promising Practices: Working with Transitioning/Transitioned Athletes in Sport. Transitioning/transitioned is a term that refers to a person experiencing gender dysphoria, or the intense discomfort experienced when physical sex and gender identity are not aligned. The goal of the project is to remove barriers that inhibit sport participation for transitioning/transitioned athletes. Sport Canada has contributed significant resources for research, education and awareness, policy development, and advocacy work in this area.
Outcomes will be made public in June 2008.
Call for papers for a special issue of the journal Sport Management Review
Gender and Sport Management: Challenges and Changes This special issue will explore changing gender/power relations, continuing challenges and key responses, such as the perennial issues relating to equity for women within the international context of sport management. Submissions are invited on related topics that cover qualitative and quantitative empirical research, conceptual discussion and case studies that focus on a range of organisational, policy and cultural contexts.
Due date for submission of papers is June 1st, 2008. All papers will be subject to peer review.

Five of Canada’s most promising women coaches have been selected for the Coaching Association of Canada’s Women in Coaching (WiC) National Team Coaching Apprenticeship Program (NTAP). Rowing coach Michelle Darvill (London, Ont.), athletics coach Carla Nicholls of (Regina, Sask.) snowboarding coach Cassandra Smith (Banff, Alta.) rugby coach Sommer Christie (Montreal,Que.) and canoe/kayak coach Lynn Dagenais ( Burnaby, B.C.), began work on the program as of November 1, 2007. Olympian Nathalie Lambert (short track speed skating, Montréal, Que.) has been appointed as Canada’s Chef de Mission for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Jasmine Northcott (Ottawa, Ont.) has taken on the role of Executive Director of AthletesCAN. Cindy Thomson has been hired as the new Coaching Program Coordinator and Meredith Gardner has been hired as the new Club Program Coordinator at the Canadian Freestyle Ski Association
