Breaking Away Bearspaw Sprint Stage Race

May 11, 2007 – The Breaking Away Bearspaw Sprint Stage Race was held on May 6 in the Bearspaw area NW of Calgary by the Calgary by the CrankMasters Cycling Club. Each stage covered one lap of the course or 6 kilometers.

A total of 19 club enthusiasts came out to this triple stage race on May 6. The weather was in full cooperation mode, sunny with
a breeze from the N.W. Much talent was on display.

We had maximum aerobic capacity tested and exceeded, pedals mashed during the super human effort required to get up the hill to the finish line and of course that exhilarating feeling from doing the 5C heart rate zone thing as the riders sprinted the last meters and proved how hard it is to shout their rider number to the finish line officials.

The instantly created teamwork required to come across the finish line at the same time when riding the Team Time Trial was a thing of beauty.

The mental gymnastics was evident as the members of each group sought the secret to winning the Australian Pursuit Road Race.

Much good humoured banter was overheard throughout the mid day attempt to develop better racers and whet the appetite for more REAL competition.

Many races are available to choose from thanks to our Calgary Crankmasters Cycling Club and the Alberta Bicycling Association throughout the season. Now that we are so much wiser, somewhat fitter and extra keen to participate, let’s bring it on!

I’d like to thank all the volunteers who made the event as smooth running as I’ve ever experienced it. They are, Chantel, Jennifer, Amanda, Mandie, Randy, Folker, Ralph, Brian, Carmen, Darryl, Michael, and Jim. Great job team!

Apologies to all who participated for the confusion on the final results. We announced the finish with the handicapped time subtracted at the end of the event.

However, the race was advertised as an Australian Pursuit. These races do not adjust for the handicap.Instead the handicap is used to make the race more competitive and exciting.

Ideally, each group races amongst themselves, plus the groups merge close to the finish line as the faster groups close the gap on the earlier starters. Today we achieved that with the first two groups coming together and 5 riders having the same time for 4th place finish

The fastest group (4 min handicap) had an issue of no one wanting to lead out. As a result some of them didn’t catch the other racers and suffered the consequences

So sorry for this confusion. I hope this does not deminish your satisfaction obtained from this endeavor
