October 9, 2009 (Frejus, France) – The last leg of the BMX SX World cup series is on the southern coast of France in Frejus. The race is held in part with the Roc d’Azur cycling event. With a record number of entries in the BMX event, 140 males and 34 females taking the start for the time trials. The trials are used to narrow the field down to 64 males and 32 females.
Sam Cools in her first race back after an injury at the South African SX race in August qualified 22nd for Saturday’s race. Sam is riding very well since coming back from her injury and is looking for a good result to gain some UCI points for 2012 Olympic qualifying.
Junior athlete Tory Nyhaug was once again Canada’s top qualifier with a solid lap that earned him 16th spot in qualifying. Tory really likes the track “It’s good and fun, not that technical, just fun and fast”. Halfway through time trials it began to lightly rain making the track a little slick. Olympian Scott Erwood ran his qualifying lap in the wet conditions and was able to qualify 56th. “The start hill was really slippy and I didn’t want to spin out so I didn’t push too hard down the hill” Scott Erwood.
Steven Creighton another junior athlete racing in the elite event had some good time trail laps but was unable to crack the top 64. This was Steve’s second BMX SX event and he has shown some good improvement, it will not be long before Steve is mixing it up with the best in the World.
Race action goes down tomorrow, good luck to our athletes.
