January 12, 2007 — Cycling BC is pleased to announce the high performance BMX team, as well as a new Jr Team program, for 2007. The BMX cyclists from these programs will be coached and developed into highly competitive athletes who will hopefully represent Canada at future Olympic Games.
Continuing on the Success from 2006, the high performance BMX will train and travel to races leading up to the 2007 UCI World Championships being held in Victoria July 26th-29th. Athletes were chosen to the team based on results from their 2006 competition.
“BC is has a great pool of high caliber athletes” says BC Team Coach Adam Muys “The BC Team structure helps to develop strong riders who are set to be a force at competitions now, and in the future, especially at BMX Worlds and other international events.” The debut of BMX as an Olympic sport is next year at the 2008 games in Beijing.
The High performance team is broken into three sub-categories; “˜A’ riders consisting Junior and Elite riders who will receive the more training and will represent the team at most events, “˜B’ riders consisting of 15+ year old riders, who will receive training and will travel to some races and, “˜C’ riders, athletes who show potential, yet need more time to develop and will support the A and B riders. For a list of selected riders, please see a list attached at the bottom.
New to 2007 is the BMX BC Jr. Team, coached by Leonard Kilgour. The team will target younger athletes with potential and develop their skills, preparing them for the high performance team. Athletes were selected from performances at the BC Championships and the BC Cup Series and were the top 2 riders from each age group. Team members will take part in a series of five training and development camps. For a list of selected riders, please see a list attached at the bottom.
The first of the BC Jr. Team development camps will take place January 21st at the Abbotsford Indoor BMX track.
