April 8, 2005 – Jean-Yves Dubé, President of EPS Inc., an industrialist from Asbestos, Quebec has played with the idea of BIONX since 1998, with the aim of designing a direct-drive, brushless highperformance wheel-motor/generator, and applying it to a bicyclee.
BIONX is a bike with an intelligent energy management that acts as a power multiplier. This technology makes you feel “bionic”. The system multiplies leg strength and boosts power by 25%, 50%, 100% and 200%. If, however, you want to train to gain muscle strength and lose weight, the BIONX system can work in the opposite way. Therefore, instead of increasing power, it reduces it from 25% to 200%. Thus BIONX is an outdoor physical training tool – you’ll feel like you have bionic legs!
Now everyone can bike without wearing themselves out, regardless of health. Many amateurs gave up riding because they couldn’t keep up with their friends or family, so they abandoned it. Now they no longer have a problem with BIONX, because you can multiply your pedaling power. Jean-Yves Dubé points out that BIONX is not an electric bike. BIONX follows the philosophy that a bike must remain a bike”¦ for exercise, health, energy and ecology.
The wheel-motor energy generator was tested over 72,000 km without requiring maintenance. BIONX can be installed on most bikes, regardless of wheel size, including tandems. It simply involves changing the rear wheel and installing the BIONX wheel, which comes with the wheel-motor/generator.
Mr. Dubé invested over $3 million to develop this high-tech product, recognized by international experts as being the most advanced system in the world. Quite a feat of Quebec ingenuity and creativity when you consider that the two main American competitors have invested more than $25 million each to date and have not yet reached the level of BIONX.
The plant in Asbestos has 22 employees and the Quebec sales network has more than 115 retailers and 25 in the rest of Canada. BIONX already has distributors in France and Belgium. The SRP for the wheel-motor/generator power multiplier system is $1,395 and the BIONX bicycle price with the complete system is $1,895. Mr. Dubé estimates that sales will reach $4 million in 2005 and $9 million in 2006.
The BIONX system won the 2004 Grand Prix Québécois of Invention.
