March 8, 2007 – The organizers of the Berlin Bicycle Demonstration are looking to break their record of 250,000 participants set in 2004. The demo, which boasts to be the largest of its kind in the world, has added two new routes for racing cyclists, from the towns of Rathenow and Prenzlau, 70 and 90 kilometres away. This brings to 19 the total number of routes converging on Berlin’s historic Victory Column.
Cruising uninterrupted and with a police escort from the suburbs into the centre of town is a unique buzz, which no cyclist should miss. The absolute highlight is a 10-kilometre stretch of city motorway that is closed to traffic. The average speed within the city limits is kept to a leisurely 13 kph allowing cyclists of all ages to take part. The event will be held on Sunday, May 28 under the motto “Respect for Cyclists” and all are welcome to support cycling as an environmentally friendly means of transport.
