July 23, 2005 (White Rock, B.C.) – The action was fierce in the second stage of the Tour de White Rock, a criterium held on a one-kilometre course in White Rock, B.C. Riders from Down Under came out on top, with New Zealand’s Brei Gudsell (NZL, BikeNZ) and Australia’s Hilton Clarke (AUS, Navigators Insurance) taking the wins in the women’s and men’s races, respectively.

Gudsell won the crowd prime of $283 on the second-last lap and then went and gapped the field at the end of the final lap. Emily Sandwith (BC, AdventureBound.ca) won the bunch sprint for second place, beating out big hitters like Sarah Uhl (USA, Quark) and Lisa Sweeney (BC, Team Coastal), who placed third and fourth. Uhl was aggressive throughout the race, winning five of eight primes for a total of $285. Sweeney also won a prime and now leads the Tour de White Rock omnium.

The men’s race was exciting, with a five-man break getting away early and eventually lapping the field. The break included Clarke, Brandon Crichton (ON, ItalPasta), Svein Tuft (BC, Symmetrics), Derek McMaster (SK, Team Coastal) and Tom Peterson (USA, Broadmark). Because Tuft was in the break, the dominating Symmetrics team controlled the pack, allowing the break to succeed.

Despite the team’s help, however, it wasn’t Tuft who took the glory. Crichton sprinted into second place, while Tuft had to settle for third place. Peterson went all out for the money, when he won the $500 crowd prime on the penultimate lap.

Symmetrics’ Andrew Pinfold (ON, Symmetrics), who finished second in yesterday’s hill climb, won the pack sprint for sixth.
