April 30, 2007 – On a punishing 20km circuit featuring and out of the saddle 39×25 climb, the decisive break formed at the halfway mark in the men’s race on Saturday, April 28, featuring Rob Britton, Derek McMaster, Jamie Sparling (all LazyBoy), Ryan Anderson (Trek/RedTruck) and Zach Garland (Masi/Adobe) along with several others. Sparling attacked solo with 30 odd kilolmetres to go and Britton bridged across on the last lap for a LazyBoy 1-2 finish.
The win gave Britton the lead in the BC Cup series, after placing 3rd in the opening round.
In the women’s race, Leah Goldstein (Symmetrics) played the same hand BC racers have seen time and time again whenever the race is hilly. Goldstein atacked early and attacked alone to solo the bulk of the 80km race to win by nearly three minutes. Second place went to Goldstein’s team mate Marni Hambleton, outsprinting Giant Canada’s Leah Guloien.
Hambleton came close to taking the BC Cup lead from Giant Canada’s Jenny Trew, but the field sprinter finished a surprising 4th on the hilly circuit to retain her lead by 3 points.
Racing continued on Sunday (with a TT and a crit not part of the BC Road Cup series) with all the key players present except the Symmetrics women who left for the Tour of Gila. The overall titles were won by Britton and Guloein.
