August 3, 2009 – The temperature has been hot, as will the racing be this coming weekend on the Squamish Valley Road when local road racer Will Routley returns to defend his BC Time Trial Championship, presented by Riley Law title on August 8. After a successful year with the Jelly Belly racing team, Will is looking forward to the event, and being home in Squamish for a week or two. The course has been on Squamish Valley Road for a number of years now, Will says that he is glad to see it there again, “It is neat to have it each year in the same place so people can compare times.”
2008 BC Women’s Time Trial champion Gillian Carleton is also registered to defend her title. Both riders will have tough competition against the top BC racers who have also placed in the National ranks; Laura Brown, who won bronze last week in the Pan American championships, and Moriah McGregor, who has been on top of the podium for this event in the past.
Hosting the event this year is the zimichcoaching club along with Team Squamish, the local mountain bike team. Barb Zimich (race organizer and club coach) is happy to have categories for all age groups at this event, “We have everyone from 12 year olds to 70 year olds competing here for medals and a place on the podium.” The younger riders will race 10 or 20 km depending on their age, while the rest will complete the 18.1 km route out and back for a total of 36.2 km.
Last year, Routley blazed through the course in 46 minutes 24 seconds, an average of 47kph – it will be exciting to see if he can do it again!
