June 10, 2007 (Summerside, PEI) – We were the last team to be introduced to the public and media last night, but it was for a good reason. For the first time, the Atlantic Cycling Centre will play the role of the “host” team in a major international event, the Tour du PEI. The race will start today with a circuit race (99 km) around beautiful Summerside and conclude on Thursday in Charlettetown with a criterium. Details of all the stage can be found at www.tourdepei.com/Eng/. Tomorrow’s individual time trial on the Confederation Bridge will be covered live with the bridge’s web cams.
The Atlantic Cycling Centre built its team with a combination of local girls and other girls from the rest of the country. “Since the CCA helped us get the invitation and that they were not sending any team, I promised them I would also help other girls who were looking for a team to enter the race;” said the Centre’s head coach, Luc Arseneau. The team will be composed of Heidi King, Kelly Murray, Julie Beveridge, Krystall Jeff and Moriah Jo McGregor. Luc Arseneau, Andrew Feestra and Sylvanne Boudreau will be the staff.
The National Cycling Centre — Atlantic Canada will also debut its newly designed jersey during this event. These are the colors the Selection program will now be using at Nationals, Tour de l’Abitibi, Tour de l’Avenir du Saguenay, etc. Like many program, the Selection one is growing and enabling riders to show their talent to the world. This year’s sponsors of the Centre’s Selection program are Giant Bicylces, Nelsons Waste Remediation Inc., Yakima, Croissant Soleil, and the Université de Moncton. The success of our program would also be impossible without the other supporters of the Centre, being the City of Dieppe, the National Sport Centre — Atlantic, the Caisse populaire Dieppe, Mike’s Bike Shop, and the Canadian Cycling Association.
