Armstrong To Autograph Coins

July 26, 2004 – (Newport Beach, California) — Now that the race is over, Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, will sign his name at least 10,000 times for coin collectors on behalf of a Los Angeles area collectibles authentication company.

Armstrong’s certified autographs will be part of the “American Heroes Series” by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a division of Collectors Universe, Inc. of Newport Beach, California.

Handwritten autographs of the 32-year old champion cyclist and cancer survivor will appear inside sonically-sealed PCGS coin holders. Each specially-made holder also will protectively contain either a Tour de France commemorative silver coin struck by the French Mint (Monnaie de Paris) or a United States coin struck during one of the years Armstrong won his six consecutive Tour de France races, 1999 to 2004.

Each encapsulated autograph and coin will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from PCGS (www.pcgs.com), the world’s largest rare coin authentication company.

Armstrong won an unprecedented sixth victory Sunday, July 25, in the grueling 2,108 mile bicycle race.

“Under terms of the agreement reached on the eve of this year’s race, Armstrong will sign his name at least 10,000 times for this project,” said Miles Standish, PCGS Senior Vice President. “The autographed coins then will be certified by PCGS for authenticity and grade, and offered for sale to the public by selected distributors.”

Armstrong is the latest well-known name to participate in a series of Collectors Universe/PCGS certified-coin autograph projects. Earlier this year, Iraqi War hero and former prisoner of war, Jessica Lynch, began participating in the American Heroes Series to help raise money for her educational foundation in Virginia. Previous signers in the program include former Presidents Gerald R. Ford and George Bush.

Collectors Universe, the parent company of PCGS, has provided “signed in the presence of” autograph certification services for many years for sports and entertainment personalities.
