Armstrong Doping Inquiry Widens – Greg LeMond Subpoenaed

by John Symon

July 17, 2010 – Three-time Tour de France winner Greg LeMond has been served with a subpoena to testify before a U.S. Grand Jury investigating allegations of that seven-time TdF winner Lance Armstrong (RadioShack) doped during his career reports the New York Daily News. The investigation was sparked by recent and very detailed allegations by fellow American cyclist Floyd Landis that Armstrong has doped.

According to the report LeMond has been ordered to produce testimony and documents about possible doping while Armstrong rode for various teams including U.S. Postal Service, Discovery Channel, Astana, and Radioshack. He has also been ordered to produce materials related to dealings with Trek Bicycle Corporation, a sponsor of Armstrong’s teams.

LeMond has been ordered to appear at a federal courthouse in Los Angeles on July 30 to answer questions in secret from the grand jury.

Meanwhile LeMond spoke to Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung (SZ) today and continued to criticize Armstrong reports Sports24. LeMond reiterated claims that Armstrong failed a doping test for EPO in 1999, but subsequent “donations” of $125,000 that Armstrong made to the UCI smoothed things over and the affair was hushed up.

Referring to the Landis allegations, LeMond said that, “Floyd is telling the truth. And they know it.” LeMond also compared the situation of doping in pro cycling to that of abuse victims and the Catholic Church. He pointed out that the top levels of the church hierarchy had to be replaced because they were aware of what had happened but did nothing.

Bloomberg reports that Armstrong crashed before starting stage 13 at the Tour de France today and finished 100th. No longer a podium contender Armstrong is now 36th in the GC and over 25 minutes behind leader Andy Schleck (Saxo Bank).
