December 5, 2006 – New Mexico’s Angel Fire Resort has confirmed that it has decided to drop its bid for the 2007 MTB World Cup. The UCI-sanctioned event scheduled for June 30 – July 1 was to have included cross-country, 4-Cross and downhill races. It had been rumoured lately that the event was in peril.
“The rumour is true,” declared David Dekema, marketing director at Angel Fire. “We’re huge fans of the series, but we couldn’t do it justice (for 2007). The reality is that we missed some huge opportunities to communicate with key people in the industry and painted ourselves into a corner. Timing is a key requirement and we need the right length (of planning) runway (to pull this off). The decision was ours to drop the WBWC in 2007. We would (however) like to get it back again in 2008.”
Dekema said he believes USA Cycling is working to find another venue for the event.
