August 2, 2002 – (Hollydaysburg, PA) Amy Jarvis of the RONA Cycling Team,
gained 10 places and now stands 7th in GC at The International (formerly
Tour de Toona), thanks to a successful breakaway by Jarvis and six other
competitors. The breakaway finished with a 6′ 32” lead over the first
group of
chasers and caused significant changes in the leaders’ classification.
However, race leader Heather Albert of Team Goldy’s was one of the escapees
and managed to consolidate her considerable advantage in first place. Manon
Jutras of Team RONA finished 10th in the stage and now ranks 8th in GC,
right behind teammate Jarvis.
The group who began the 97-km stage in Hollydaysburg was tired from
the previous day’s long and hard stage. It took several kilometres to warm-up
before the attacks began. Then a few skirmishes, some of them initiated
by RONA’s Andrea Hannos, reminded the peloton that this ride was actually a
race. At about mid-stage, a real breakaway formed, with seven women aboard
including RONA’s Jarvis. Since seven teams were represented in the break,
nobody was left to chase and the gap increased with relative ease. At the
end, the speedy Laura Van Gilder won the sprint and the stage.
“With three girls still in the race, we have two in the top ten”, commented
RONA’s
directeur sportif André Aubut after the stage. Except for Heather Albert’s
decisive break yesterday, which everybody missed, we were in every move all
week. The race is far from over, but I think we’re having a good week.”
Tomorrow’s stage is a 129-km circuit race around Martinsburg. The
seven-stage race ends on Sunday, August 4.
