Amstel Gold Race – Vinokourov the Victor

April 20, 2003 – Kazakh rider Alexandre Vinokourov (Telekom) took his first
ever win in a one-day classic, winning the 38th Amstel Gold Race. Vinkourov
attacked from the lead break of 10 in the final five kilometres and just
held off charging Dutchman Michael Boogerd (Rabobank) and Danilo Di Luca
(Saeco) up the famous Cauberg climb. American Lance Armstrong (USPS)
finished a solid 8th following some tactical manoevres in the final few
kilometres between the riders in the break. After four rounds Belgian Peter
Van Petegem leads the World Cup overall, followed by Dario
Pieri (Saeco).
