May 20, 2011 (Solvang, CA) – It was a typical warm Solvang spring day with the morning fog burning off by 10am and replaced with eye-rubbing perfection including uber-clean sidewalks and rolling emerald hills surrounding this quaint idea of “The Best American Danish Town”. Putting the hammer down was winner David Zabriskie (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo, who may have more slang names than any other rider ever – and he’s OK with that.

The rangy, wild cowboy known for his fast cars and ITT races, who many call Mr. Slacker, is known to ride his own race in life and on the bike – and many times he’s come up looking so well and dominating – not exactly the term for a slacker. “Sometimes, I just blaze, I don’t know what happens, it’s a deep burn that gets out, I’m glad I did it today, my son Waylon won’t remember but at least there’ll be a photograph proving he was here. It was a lot of fun for me today, but don’t expect me to punch it up the hill manana, I may take it easier, we’ll see.”

Today, sandwiched between two Canadian riders – Rob Britton (Bissell Cycling) and Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling) – he shot off the clock within the last of 25 riders, passing Britton about 300 meters before that last turn to the finish line. Z-Bisquit bested 3-time AToC winner, Levi Leipheimer (USA) Team RadioShack by 14s at 30:35, while Leipheimer shaved almost half of teammate Christopher Horner’s lead gaining 37 seconds, but still shy of the overall GC by 38 seconds.

Horner came in a respectable 6th just 51 seconds off the Zabriskie. “I was feeling really good about today, allowing for over a half minute loss by Levi which actually was a fair trade – you should see him on a good day… he’d take my toy (AToC GC) away.” Leipheimer has won three time trials in the six editions of AToC.

Canada’s Ryder Hesjeda (Garmin-Cervelo) slipping one notch down to 8th in GC coming in 23rd at 1:42 off the leader, while Britton put in a strong ride to place 30th at 1:50 bringing him up to 26th in the GC. Meir surged to 26th overall with his performance today. Zach Bell and Sven Tuft, who still is recovering from a virus, lead the SpiderTech p/b C10 crew in 45th and 48th respectively.
