May 19, 2011 (Paso Robles, Cailfornia) – With the first perfect day beating out any blues from this year’s truncated Tour, the roads of central California gushed sunshine beaming the strongest for the young man in neon Green – the young Peter Sagan (Svk) Liquigas-Cannondale – the back-to-back stage winner here last year. It became a fight to the line as veteran sprinter Oscar Freire (Esp) Rabobank, was reeled in right after entering Paso Robles. Freire had no teammates to help bring him to the line, so he was on his own dueling with an energized field, and just missed out on the podium today.
Another change in plans for the AToC stage race, due to poor road conditions from a storm in April (a landslide along the coast) took the riders to the beautiful and steep hills of Carmel Valley with three KoMs sandwiching the Carmel hills in the first 52km. After Carmel valley, rollers and tail-wind flats along Highway 101 delivered the peloton to the central California agricultural roads, finally giving way to the last KoM climb 33km before finishing in sunny Paso Robles and the largest crowd this year.
Team RadioShack and Garmin-Cervelo were vying for overall dominance in both the team and individual rider categories. With Garmin taking four of the top ten positions on Stage 4, including Ryder Hesjedal (Can) in 7th place, they kept a close watch on each other while allowing a 10-rider breakaway early which had no threat to their dominions.
For most of the day through 120km the lead group had a 3-minute lead with a strong tailwind on the flat Cattleman road whisking the peloton along side by side with 16-wheeler trucks 5-meters aside on Highway 1.
A small accident in back of the peloton on Cattleman Rd. caused confusion and the peloton began to split up after km 122 before launching into the San Lucas hills on highway 198. The lead group’s attrition came into focus entering the hills, imploding down to two riders with less than two minutes ahead of the peloton.
Freire (Rabobank), a feared sprinter and former three-time world champion, attacked with Stephan Deneli (Leopard-Trek) popping out in front keeping their lead and hovering to two minutes through the hills with less than around 12kms to go. With Liquigas-Cannondale, RadioShack and Garmin-Cervelo controlling the peloton, the GC riders weren’t worried about Freire who was almost 15 minutes behind Chris Horner, the AToC leader.
TeamRadio Shack, keeping Horner well-protected in the their pocket, put the pedals down with Liquigas-Cannodale and HTC-Highroad with 10km to go. Knowing he was tired from his solo attack, the peloton timed it perfectly chasing Freire down in the last 2km entering Paso Robles.
But Freire didn’t fade into the sunset and fought hard to the line but without any help. It came down to the a beautiful lead out for Sagan to beat another under 23 year old Leigh Howard (HTC-Highroad) and Ben Swift (Sky Procycling).
Later Freire exclaimed, “I was feeling really good and we worked well together (with Deneli). Iit was a hard stage to ride and yes to lose, but I found good legs and had to test myself and the others – I’m not done yet in the Tour, I’ll fight again.”
Sagan, terminally shy and humble, smiled, commenting, “This was a really hard day and although I think my victory last year at the Big Bear mountain top finish is my fondest of this Tour, I’m really happy to have come away with a close win.”
When asked how he thought he’d fare at tomorrow’s individual time trial, Sagan was more guarded, “My legs are a bit like jelly now as today was an unknown route and a lot harder and faster pace than expected—vediamo cosa sucede domani.” (we’ll see what happens tomorrow).
Chris Horner, happy to be in the golden leader’s jersey (now called the yellow jersey by commentators), talked about his chances on winning in Thousand Oaks on the last day: “I’ll probably get 20 seconds shaved from me tomorrow at the time trial which is fine since I’ve got some room to wiggle. All I have to do is stay in my RadioShack cocoon the rest of the days and it’s all gravy for me, man – gold looks good on me, doesn’t it?” If his margin sticks to the end, Horner will carve out the largest lead over the GC contenders in the history of AToC with currently a 1:15″ lead over Andy Schleck.
Nothing changed significantly in the GC categories save Canadian Will Routley who slipped from 4th to 5th in KoM contention while his teammate Jonathan Patrick McCarty continues to lead the Mountain Classification. Popular local rider, Ben Jacques -Maynes (Bissell) went down in a crash.
So how did the Canadian riders fare today – here are some qutoes from the boys:
Riding today with most Aggressive Rider jersey from his ill-fated attempt on Mt. Sierra in San Jose, Hesjedal is focusing on defending his team’s #1 overall classification ahead of RadioShack by 2:48. Hesjedal commented before rolling out on yesterday’s attack at the foot of the last climb on Sierra Rd: “I took my chance to put the pressure on, you never know what will happen; we will continue to put the pressure on and see how the numbers go. Will I stick my neck out today? You never know…” (smiling as he jetted off to the line).
Rob Britton (Bissell) 25th in GC, was all smiles with similar strategies for today: “We’ll hope to be in the breakaway and if all goes to plan we plan to be on podium.”
Will Routley, who made the big moves yesterday attacking and collecting points in a group breakaway at KoM 1 and 2 under Mt. Hamilton, said, “ I feel really good lately and hope to attack today if the occasion presents itself, despite this year’s unknown route.”
Andrew Pinfold: “It was one of these days where nothing was sure, breakaway or bunch kick ’til near the end – we just wanted to keep Rory (Sutherland) protected – we were able to do that today, he’s only eight seconds off podium, we’ll see what happens at the time trial.”
Christian Meier commented, “Aside from my going for breakaways and helping boost Rory onto the podium, my personal goal is to get on the podium and steal a kiss from one of the podium girls – my girlfriend is up there!”
Keven Lacombe: “We’ll see how RadioShack controls the field, since we have the KoM jersey we’ll protect it and of course I’m going to try to win a stage.”
Nic Hamilton (Jelly Belly) on his bad crash yesterday: “I was going down the side of Mt. Hamilton and took a hard hit from my glasses, I’ll be taking home 6-7 stitches. They gave me some numbing agent and I didn’t feel a thing when they sewed me up – I’ll stick with team to the end to spread the love”.
Friday features both men’s and inaugural women’s ITT beginning at 11:30am PST.
