Amgen Tour of California Stage 4 Report, Full Results, Photos – Horner Wins, Hesjedal 7th

by pedalmag.com

May 18, 2011 (San Jose, CA) – With heavy clouds overhead floating East towards the Sierras, and winds kicking up, today was a day for the climbers as Chris Horner (USA) Radioshack predicted. Following the two previous stages where the sprinters dominated the Tour, the stalwart American showed himself as the hungriest to display his climbing chops, finishing with a 1:15 gap over second-placed Andy Schleck (Lux) Leopard/Trek.

During the first three stages the climbers weren’t able to do much until today’s stage as the Spooner Lake and Emerald Bay climbs on day one were a whitewash with an unusual snow fall in Lake Tahoe, and the legendary Donner Pass planned for the following day took no prisoners as the weather forced the start to be moved West to Nevada City for an easier 60-mile route to Sacramento.

Most pundits put their bet on either Levi Leipheimer (USA) Radioshack or Schleck to stamp their climbing dominance on stage 4 with the Sierra ascent, though the locals were shouting for Horner, “the Cowboy” from Oregon, to take a surprise win – and their wish was granted in typical Horner style – explosive and out of nowhere.

Horner had predicted, “I think the overall classification battle will be hotly contested from behind and the Sierra Road ascent (on Stage 4), will show who is really in the running to win the Tour of California.” The wily American took the stage and the leader’s jersey adding that he’s “…racing for Levi but wearing the leader’s Jersey.” If Levi has a bad day, which rarely happens in a ITT in Solvang on Stage 5, Horner could take the Tour just as he did last year in Pais Basque – not bad for a rider who is almost 40.

Earlier in the day Norway’s Thor Hushvold (Garmin-Cervelo) was at the front of the peloton with Radioshack, leading the peloton over the flats and rollers until the Sierra climb arrived. The peloton allowed a non-GC contender to lead the group manned by Ben Jacques-Maynes (USA) Bissell Cycling opening a gap of over 2.30 with 75km to go, but they were quickly losing time as the group faded just before the 1st KoM.

Lars Boom (Ned) Rabobank Cycling Team lead out the pain beating with Will Routley (Can) Team SpiderTech p/b C10 to the first KoM cat 4 climb. But Routley stuck to him grabbing points on the 2nd KoM before Mt. Hamilton, the highest peak in the South Bay area with 8-10% grades.

The lead team of nine showed chinks in their group armour, beginning to splinter before the base of Mt. Hamilton. Then as Hamilton loomed the lead group fell apart. Mt. Hamilton was conquered by the KoM’s first 2011 winner, SpiderTech p/b C10 American Jonathan McCarthy who now leads the Mountain Classification.

The last third of the stage was a cat-and-mouse match with the GC riders Schleck, Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Garmin-Cervelo, Leipheimer, Rory Sutherland (Aus) UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling, Thomas Danielson (USA) Team Garmin-Cervelo, Daniel Martin (Irl) Team Garmin-Cervelo, and Horner reformed in groups up until the beginning of the 5.6km/3.5-mile Sierra Rd. ascent.

Climbing up Sierra first with a 15-second gap, Hesjedal, winner of today’s “most aggressive rider” jersey, began to look tired as Horner exploded up hill with 2.2 miles to go to the top.

Hesjedal commented later, “I felt pretty good following a holiday after Liege and the Classics. I was disappointed when I saw [Chris] Horner and Levi come up but his from is better right now, and so I kept in the game by helping out the team (Martin and Danielson) gain time.” Hesjedal was optimistic. “There’s still a few places where I can make time up against the race leader and I’m looking forward to Solvang.”

Schleck, and Sutherland joined the podium in second and third with Leipheimer coming in fourth as Horner takes over the leader’s jersey.
