May 31, 2006 – A relatively unknown rider on Canada’s national cycling scene until this year, Calgary’s Alexandra Wrubleski has begun to make quite a name for herself at this year’s Tour du Grand Montreal, as reported in La Presse today. After only two years of racing she delivering great results beginning with a top-10 finish at the first stage at the Tour du Grand Montreal. She continued to impress at yesterday’s tough Rigaud road race in Stage 2, and is now the top Canadian overall in 7th.
The 22 year-old Wrubleski began her athletic career speed-skating and much like famed Olympian Clara Hughes, took up cycling to improve her first passion on the ice. The Calgary resident began to show great promise at the 2005 Canada Summer Games where she finished second in the criterium and fifth in the road race.
Since then she’s tried her hand at the big leagues, finishing in 5th place in a stage at New Mexico’s recent Tour de Gila, and back at home, she was 12th at the Montreal Road World Cup.
All eyes will be on Wrubleski over the next two days as the Tour du Grand Montreal wraps up this Thursday, June, 1.
