October 19, 2008 – Here are notices of two upcoming cycling events in Alberta. The Campus Cross cyclocross race takes place on October 25, while the ABA Cycling Awards Gala is scheduled for November 15. See below for more info on these events.

Campus Cross – October 25
Central Alberta Bicycle Club (CABC) present the final stop on the Alberta Cyclo-Cross Calendar this year before the Provincial Championships. The course is unchanged from previous years with 2.8km course with a 60ft sand section, grass, singletrack and a run up that offers a true test of Cyclocross skill. Riders must pre-register for this event – don’t miss out on the Campus Cross – to register click here.

2008 Awards Gala
Come out and join the ABA staff and the Alberta cycling community in celebrating riders’ accomplishments and wrapping-up an outstanding 2008 racing season!

– Location: Shaganappi Hall, 2608 14 Avenue SW, Calgary
– Doors Open: 6:30 — 11:30pm
– Awards Presentations: 7:30pm

July 3, 2008 – Here’s the latest news from ABA headquarters, including information about the upcoming Calgary Bike Week, racing info and news, and an interview with BMX Olympian Jimmy Brown.

Calgary Bike Week
With only 30 days until the kick-off of the first annual “Calgary Bike Week” the Alberta Bicycle Association (ABA) has announced the final events to be contested during the week. The “˜festival of cycling’ will take place from August 2 – 10, 2008 and will include a veritable smorgasbord of cycling disciplines: time trials, hill climbs, criteriums, road races, as well as Provincial and Youth Championships.

Calgary Bike Week is expected to attract close to 500 athletes from all across Alberta and Canada on spectacular and challenging week of racing. Calgary can expect a variety of racers converging on the city including professional trade teams to weekend warriors with families in tow.

Canmore Canada Cup
Canmore Nordic Centre will play host to the Canmore MTB Canda Cup. The races will be held on a combination of Nordic trails and challenging single track.

This year will also feature a Little Ziggy, Demonstration Event Cross Country Race for U9, U11, U13, and U15. You don’t need a licence for the Demonstration event so come out and try racing.

Canada Day Criterium
Perfect conditions set the stage for racing at the Canada Day Criterium. The modified points race proved to make interesting and high paced racing. Full results are now available here.

Bikeshevik Grand Prix
Synergy Racing will play host to the 10th anniversary of the Bikeshevik Grand Prix at the Glenmore Velodrome on July 4-6, 2008. ABA ability categories (1/2, 3, 4, 5 and women A and B) apply, with additional categories for young riders in pursuits and kilo/500. Categories may be combined if field sizes warrant. Albertan’s on the Podium at Kamloops Canada Cup
Alberta athletes took home six medals from the lastest XC Canada Cup stop in Kamloops, BC. Leading the way for Team Alberta were Kelly Hall with a gold medal and Ty Andrews with a bronze in the U17 category. Team Alberta’s Justin Middleton took the bronze in the Junior Men’s category. Tim Heemserk (United Cycle) took the bronze medal in the Elite Men’s category with Steve Martins & Mike Blennerhasset (Hardcore) taking gold and silver in the Master A men. Cloverlawn ITT
Fast and hot conditions greated riders at the Cloverlawn ITT – a 40k Individual Time Trial just outside of Leduc. Full results are now available here.

BMX Provincials #3 & 4
Stony Plain and Airdrie are gearing up for the next two stops on the Provincial BMX Calendar. Online registration and information are now available.

Albertans Medal at Road Nationals
Albertans had a great first day at the Canadian Road National Championships. Calgary’s Lev Krivitsky (Terrascape) Carolyn Soules (Crankmasters) and Gideon Krishtalka (Team H &R Block) lead the Masters categories in the Individual Time Trial in St. Georges de Beauce, QC. Lev took out the gold medal in the Canadian National ITT title for Master Men 60+ and Soules won the silver medal in the Master Women 40+ ITT and Krishtalka took the silver in the Master A Men’s Category.

Team Alberta athletes Jessica Kissels came 4th in the Junior Women’s Time Trial with Dustin Andrews placing 14th in the Junior Men. Brayden McDougall won the Sliver in the Men’s CP – 3 Category. Devon Smibert (Synergy) riding pilot in the Tandem race with Brian Cowie won the silver medal.

On the second day Dan Wood (ERTC/Revolution Cycle) took the gold medal in the Master A Road Race. Team Alberta riders Jessica Kissel took 5th in the Junior Women’s category and Dustin Andrews was 6th in the Junior Men’s event.

On the 3rd and 4th days Albertan’s were again strong in the Criterium. Jessica Kissel (Team Alberta) took 8th in the Open Women, Dustin Andrews (Team Alberta) had a great race taking 4th in the Junior men and Dan Wood (ERTC) stood atop the podium with a second gold of the competition in the Master A Men.
