June 20, 2002 (Sun Peaks,B.C.) – The country’s best downhillers took Sun
Peaks by storm today as they ripped down the long dusty course. The alpine
breeze stretched plumes of dust behind racers like jetstreams. Riders
described the course as “brutal” because it was so physically demanding.
Brook Baker (Oakley/Specialized) rode away with the junior women’s
national downhill title while junior expert Kwanah Sioui of Quebec held
nothing back, grabbing his first national champion jersey. Despite some
sketchey manoeuvres in her run, Sylvie Allen (Fanatyk Co.) was the fastest
woman of the day and the new Canadian champion. Dustin Adams (Giant Bicycles
USA) was the man of the day. In a single run, he destroyed his competition
by over 11 seconds, won the Downhill Canada Cup #4 and slipped on the
coveted red and white national champion jersey for the second year in a row.
