Adam Coates was one of six recipients to win a SaskSport Inc. 2001 Athlete
of the Year award on March 7, 2002, at a gala awards banquet in Regina
attended by 700 people including Coates family, his coach Irene Kokotailo
and many cycling enthusiasts. Coates, 17, became one of only 10 Canadians
in history to become a world cycling champion. He won the gold medal in
the team relay at the World Mountain Bike Championships with teammates
Chrissy Redden, Roland Green and Ryder Hesjedal. He also placed 15th at the
World Championship Junior Cross-Country event in Vail, Colorado. Back on
home turf he won the National Championships, placed 2nd overall in the
Canada Cup Series and is returning to the 2002 season for one more year as
a junior! Congratulations Adam!
