April 21, 2012 (Contrecoeur, QC) – Remi Pelletier-Roy (Garneau-Quebecor) won the elite men’s road race on Saturday at the inaugural GP de la Mairie de Contrecoeur, with help from his teammate Brett Tivers, in cold and rainy conditions. A 5-rider breakaway group was formed during the first lap of the 8-lap, 107.2-km race and gained close to a two-minute lead over the main peloton.
Late in the race, with approximately 2.5 laps to go, Tivers and Pelletier-Roy broke away from the lead group and developed a sizable lead of their own, and held on to give Garneau-Quebecor a 1-2 finish. In the Senior Women’s 54.8km race Isabelle Rodrigue (Deda/HYPE) took the win over Josee Heppell (Iris) in second with Adriane Provost (Stevens Racing p/b the Cyclery) in third. “It was a tough race in the cold but team Deda-HYPE stuck to the plan to be offensive. It worked fast, after 4 minutes we were in break. At the end, I positioned myself after Josée Heppell from Iris and I kept sprinting and took her at the finish line,” Rodrique told Pedal.
After a 3rd-place performance at the Tour of the Battenkill a week ago, many eyes were on young Alizee Brien of Specialized-Mazda-SGC. Brien spoke to us after the race and explained that as the race developed, the team strategy at Contrecoeur was to work for team-mate Virginie Gauthier who jumped ahead in the break. Bridging the gap to the leaders under the conditions would have been impossible without bringing the rest of the pack along. With the help of her team, the lead breakaway group were never caught and Gauthier placed fifth in the bunch sprint.
The GP de la Mairie de Contrecoeur is Stage 1 of the new Le Tour de la Montérégie.
