June 15, 2003 (Colorado Springs, CO) – On the final day of track competition at the 7-Eleven Velodrome Sarah Uhl (Saturn) found her groove Sunday afternoon and rode to a victory in the women's 10 km scratch race. The Perkasie, PA resident came into the 2003 Pan Am and World Championship Qualifier with big goals. After pulling out of the points race on Friday night the Saturn rider said she simply readjusted – it was her new mental attitude that gave her the edge she needed.

“This is my first time racing at altitude so I definitely struggled this week,” said Uhl. ” I do well under pressure and with the scratch race I only had one opportunity left to qualify for World's. Uhl jumped ahead of second-place finisher Becky Quinn (Red 5 Racing) and third-place finisher Erin Mirabella (Frisco Cycling Club) on the final lap, but was well aware of her competition the entire race.

“I also went into today with much more patience and respect for the quality of riders too,” added Uhl. ” I was keeping my eye on Erin and Becky knowing that I wanted to win on a sprint. I feel my form is good right now, but I wasn't prepared to be off the front here in this altitude.”

Chris Witty (T-Mobile) continued her sharp form driving home the women's sprint with Jen Wangerin (Jamba Juice) and Jillian Vogtli leading out the first and second laps for the winning women's team sprint time of 1:10.386.

The men's madison was contested under warm and sunny skies with Jame Carney (Prime Alliance) and Mike Tillman (Schroeder Iron) taking the win with 30 points. Colby Pearce (OFOTO) and Tyler Farrar (Jelly Belly) finished just behind with 28 points after 160 laps. Curtis Tolson and Kenny Williams (Saturn of Seattle) took third with 8 points.

The men's team sprint qualifying put the Cody Racing 1 team of Steven Alfred (Santa Cruz, Calif.), Giddeon Massie (Bethlehem, PA.), and Christian Stahl (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the number one spot with a qualifying time of 1:01.428, the day's fastest time in the team sprint.

With their team in the leading spot, Alfred was not completely ready to wrap it up until the final ride of the day. “It was a long night last night with the sprints and all, so for the final we'll have to be even more focused,” commented Alfred after his team's qualifying ride. “You know, back in San Diego at the AVC event, we had also qualified first and ended up second in the final because we lost focus. So, basically I can't relax and I think that's the mentality we all should have to win.”

Alfred's focus kept the Cody Racing 1 Team in check as the final round drew near. Alfred and company clocked a winning time of 1: 02.076 to take the final round over the “Mother of All Bombs” team of Mike Beers (Breinigsville, PA), Anton Quist (Arlington, VA), and Eduardo Cocina (Miami, FLA) who posted a 1:02.780 good for second-place.
