49th Annual Tour di Via Italia

April 27, 2007 – The 49th annual “Tour di Via Italia” bicycle race will be held this year on Sunday September 2, 2007 . This long-standing race has become a mainstay event on the cyclist calendar, attracting participants from all over the United States and Canada — including 7 time Tour de France competitor Frankie Andreau, who has been taking part in the Pro senior men’s race for many years.

The race attracts an estimated crowd of 10,000 and approximately 600 participants. Not only has Tour di Via Italia become an important part of the Canadian-Italian community’s history, but it also provides many additional benefits. For instance, the event promotes competition, sportsmanship, physical activity, and bicycle safety, as well as attracting a large number of tourists while engaging all generations. Event organizers have even added a tricycle race for toddlers.

In addition, the merchants and major service clubs in Windsor will be participating in various activities in order to offer a full “family oriented day” for this event. All of the scheduled activities, such as the exciting race itself and children’s program will be free of charge to all citizens and visitors!

The festivities start at 12pm and run throughout the day. The 100km Pro men’s race begins at 5pm. There will be an awards ceremony and street party following the event.

“We’re hoping this event motivates Windsorites to get their bikes out of the garage,” says Event Organizer Michelle Sfalcin. “Regardless of age, skill level, or experience, we encourage the local community to participate in this event.”
