Since 2008, the Tour de l’Abitibi held the UCI-sanctioned title of Junior Nations Cup, yet allowed participation by select regional cycling clubs. However, this year the UCI decided to restrict Coupe des Nations events to national teams only. The Tour de l’Abitibi will retain its title of international competition, and it is the only junior cycling race of this magnitude sanctioned by the UCI in America, without Coupe des Nations sanctioning.
The President of the Tour de l’Abitibi, Suzanne Fortin’s priority is to continue to host regional teams. “The Tour de l’Abitibi should remain an event where the international elite comes together, but it must also remain focused on the development of young riders from regional clubs,” said Ms. Fortin. The Tour de l’Abitibi is recognized as an important step on the path of racers aspiring to compete in the professional ranks.
Organizers assure that the unique event will maintain its 43-year repution as an impressive organization. In addition, the community of Rouyn-Noranda can expect a race like they have never seen before in the region.
The 44th edition of the Tour de l’Abitibi will be held in Rouyn-Noranda, QC, from July 16-22.
