October 9, 2006 – The 2006 24 Hours of Adrenalin world championships concluded at noon on Sunday, Oct. 8 and with it brought the end of an era and perhaps, the beginning of a new one. With warm weather & a beautiful full moon welcoming the hundreds of riders who showed up at 1996 Olympic site in Conyers, Georgia, the Trek VW team showed up in force ready to battle for both the men’s and women’s 24 Hour solo crowns.
Following an unequaled run of six consecutive 24 Hour solo world championship wins, Chris Eatough’s (Trek/VW) reign of dominance as the world’s most successful endurance racer was finally brought to an end. Despite a spirited attempt that had him riding 232 miles (29 laps) in just over 23 hours, Eatough ran into some trouble in the middle of the night and was forced to slow. In the end it was Australian rider Craig Gordon who took the win with 32 laps – an effort which eventually put him in the hospital soon after he limped across the finish line.
In the women’s event, Trek/VW rider Sue Haywood returned to the world of 24 hour racing circuit following a five year respite after she won back to back victories at the Moab 24. Like Chris, Sue faced tight competition throughout the night and engaged in a see-saw battle with a pack of determined competitors. However in the end, she managed to rally and finish a lap ahead of the second place finisher for a total of 26 laps at just over 23 hours.
