2014 Burnaby 4-Day Bike Race Champions Crowned – Report, Results, Photos

January 01, 2015 (Burnaby, BC) – The 2014 Burnaby 4-Day Bike Race Champions have been crowned, the winners’ jerseys have been handed out, and the cycling community is abuzz with excitement. This year’s racing showcased the strength of local riders against top visitors from several nations.

“The level of competition this year was amazing,” enthused Kelyn Akuna, Race Director for the Burnaby 4Day. “It’s great to have world-class riders here in Burnaby.” Record-breaking crowds flocked to the Harry Jerome Sports Centre to enjoy endurance and sprint events, a junior rider development camp, the music of River’s Divide, and a craft beer festival.

The Elite division was made up of teams and individual riders from Canada, the US, Germany, and Japan. Local favourite and Canadian Olympian Jasmin Glaesser took first-place honours in the women’s field. World Cup medal winner Steph Roorda took second place, with Joanne Kiesanowski, 8-time New Zealand National Champion, came in third.

In the Elite Men’s division, Team BurnabyNOW, consisting of Daniel Holloway and Jacob Duehring, came in first. Team Canada, Zach Bell and Jacob Schwingboth, finished in second place with Michael Schweizer and Christoph Schweizer of Team Germany in third.

In the B division, competition was strong, with Vincent Marcotte coming in first, Michael Wegner in second, and Zane Hayes in third. Neil Davies was first in the C division, with John White and Niall Dempsey tying for second. The Master’s division was won by Julian Base, with Emil Marcetta and Mike Buckosky in second and third respectively. The U17/U19 division top prize was won by Cooper Rombold, with Brendan Cowley in second and Josh Bateman in third. In the U15 division, Eric Inkster was first, Brennan Hodgins second and Tyler Davies won third.

“You might think it’s just a bunch of guys riding their bikes, but it’s really more Thunderdome than Biodome,” said Zach Bell, two-time Canadian Olympian and second-place finisher in the Men’s Elite division. Spectators and competitors alike enjoyed the variety of race types, cheering on their favourite riders with signs, flags, and hearty applause.

The Burnaby Velodrome Club operates one of only two indoor cycling tracks in Canada and one of the fastest in North America. The track is open year-round for training and racing.
