July 31, 2012 (Panorama, BC) – Canada’s young downhill talent made a strong statement at the second and final Canada DH Cup at Panorama Resort, BC, this past weekend. Junior expert Mark Wallace (Devinci) took the top spot in the combined elite/junior field and secured the overall title, while fellow junior expert Forrest Riesco came in third.
“I almost threw it away in the first corner, but it just started to get better after that,” Wallace told Pedal. The young speed king also became the 2012 National Champion earlier this year. “It was fun, really rough, and few spots you had to carry your speed through. It was good.”
The Canada Cup course, located in the beautiful mountain setting of Panorama Resort, was buffed more than previous years – a change welcomed by most riders as it offered more speed and flow. However, as training progressed it became as rough as ever, challenging riders’ line selections and strategy.
On the women’s side, elite Danice Uyesugi (CNN/Intense) topped the field and took home the Canada DH Cup overall title, followed by Kristen Courtney (AdrenalineRacer/ToWheels) in second, Miranda Miller (Santa Cruz) third, Vaea Verbeeck (Independent) fourth and Jamie Hill (Santa Cruz) fifth.
“The course was super fun, I loved it,” said Uyesugi. “It was just lots of corners, and loose and fast…nothing really too crazy on it, I loved it.”
The Canada DH Cup finale was combined with the 5th stop of the BC Cup. The event went smoothly under sunny skies and warm temperatures.
