release by Cycling Canada Cyclisme

September 12, 2012 (Dieppe, NB) – Here are the full results and some quotes from Day 1 at the 2012 Canadian Track Championships  in Dieppe, NB where Joseph Veloce (Team Ontario) and Tara Whitten (TIBCO-To the Top) won the Elite men’s and women’s Sprint competitions and Cycling BC took the Women’s Team Pursuit title.

Quotes

“I wasn’t expecting a whole lot today. l took some time off after the Olympic Games, so I am definitely happy with how I rode. I surprised myself in the qualifying round. I heard I tied the track record that was set in 1996, so that’s pretty good. Going through the rounds, I used my strengths in the acceleration and just had to get in the front and get in the lead. The biggest thing I learnt from the Olympic was not to be hesitant, make a move and go for it. Even if you come off the track losing, you put a good effort in and you can never be upset if you put the effort in and the other guy was fastest on the day.”
— Joseph Veloce (Fonthill, ON) Canadian Champion, Sprint, Elite Men

“I think I won the sprints here five year ago, at my first Canadian Track Championships when Monique [Sullivan] wasn’t racing yet. It’s kind of funny to come back here. That was sort of the beginning of my Olympic journey, and now it’s kind of the end. I can’t remember clearly what the velodrome was like five years ago because it was my first Canadian Championships and I was excited. It’s a great track to race on today. Anytime we can improve the facilities we have in Canada is a great opportunity.

“It’s definitely a different feeling than it was a month ago. I was probably in the best shape of my life, and certainly not now. It’s always fun to race, no matter what, the legs feels like I enjoyed racing.

“I’d like to thank the organizing committee for hosting these Championships. I really hope in the coming years, we can start to improve the attendance. It would be great to see the categories full, and more team pursuit riders especially after the success we are having internationally. I think this is a start with a great event like this. I hope the people watched the Olympics and will be inspired to start racing.”
— Tara Whitten (Edmonton, AB) Canadian Champion, Sprint, Elite Women
