September 2, 2010 (Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC) – The Junior Men’s XC race will soon be underway with overcast skies and the chance of showers with much cooler conditions.at 18 degrees. It rained overnight making the course less dusty. There are 75 starters and Canada has seven riders racing – Evan McNeely, Steven Noble, Antoine Caron, Mitchell Bailey, Jeremy Martin, Leandre Bouchard and Etienne Moreau. The junior men will complete one 3km start loop followed by 5 laps for a total of 26km
Start Loop
Roger Walder (Switzerland) and Skyler Trujillo (USA) are at the front as the race is under way… there was a crash and Mathew Waghorn (New Zealand) went down with some other riders. Canada’s Bailey had a problem at the start and is off the back.
Lap 1
Julia Schelb (Germany) is leading followed by Michiel Van Der Heijden (Netherlands) in second, with Maximilian Vieider (Italy) in third, Walder is 4th and Anton Stepanov (Russian Federation) is 5th – time was 9:44.
Canada’s McNeely and Caron are at 45s.
Through the tech zone it’s Vieider, Schelb and Van Der Heijden leading followed closely by Walder and Alrick Martin (France)… the pace is fast and the riders are strung out behind.
Lap 2
Schelb, Vieider, Van Der Heijden and Walder come thru at 26:47 – following in 5th is Martin (France) with Jeff Luyten (Belgium) and Julien Trarieux (France) at 17s. Canada’s McNeely is 8th at 33s and Caron is 9th at 50s.
Further back at 2:39 are Canada’s Martin, Bailey and Bouchard riding together.
Van Der Heijden has opened up a 20s gap at the half way point – behind him are Vieider, Walder and Schelb… then further back are Trarieux and Martin… just behind them are Luyten, McNeely and Caron.
Lap 3
Van Der Heijden comes thru at 43:11 and he’s extended his lead to 49s. Behind him Trarieux has joined Schelb, Walder, Vieider as they chase the leader. Martin is alone in 6th at 1:07 followed by Luyten – then it’s Canada’s McNeely in 8th at 1:26 followed by Caron in 9th at 1:35 – in 10th is Marvin Gruget from France.
At the 1/2 point there’s no change with Van Der Heijden working hard at the front looking focused and he’s being chased by the 4 riders battling for silver and bronze at this stage. McNeely and Caron are holding their own in 8th and 9th.
Lap 4
With two laps to go Van Der Heijden has extended his lead to 1:18 as the chase group starts to splinter – Trarieux is in second followed by Vieider in 3rd at 1:24, then it’s Schelb at 1:41, Luyten is at 1:58, Walder is at 1:59, Martin is at 2:09 in 7th.
Caron has caught McNeely and they’re at 2:25… then it’s Gruget in 10th. Canada’s Martin is 26th, Bailey is 27th, Bouchard is 31st and Moreau is 47th at 7:44.
Van Der Heijden continues to charge ahead at the half way point – Gruget has now joined Caron and McNeely and the three are battling it out.
Lap 5 Final
Holland’s Van Der Heijden is looking strong and now has a 1:21 lead over Trarieux in second with Schelb and Vieider in a race for the bronze at 1:55.
Then it’s Luyten in 5th at 2:26… followed by Gruget who has moved up into 6th followed by Caron who also advanced into 7th at 3:07 – Walder is in 8th and McNeely is in 9th.
Bailey has moved up to 26th, Martin is 28th and Bouchard is 31st at 7:26.
Heading into the final climbs there’s no change…
