2010 Track World Championships Preview

March 24, 2010 (Copenhagen, Denmark) – Following training camps in Los Angeles and in Appledoorn, the Netherlands, the Canadian track team is now in Copenhagen, Denmark, set to compete at the 2010 Track World Championships which run from March 24-28 at the Ballerup Super Arena.

Nine riders strong, Team Canada includes Zach Bell, Julia Bradley, Laura Brown, Stephane Cossette, Stephanie Roorda, Travis Smith, Monique Sullivan, Joseph Veloce, and Tara Whitten.

Racing begins on Wednesday, March 24 with Canadian riders competing in the Individual Pursuit (Tara Whitten), 500m Time Trial (Monique Sullivan), Team Sprint (Stephane Cossette, Travis Smith, Joe Veloce), and 40km Points race (Zach Bell).

Thursday March 25 will see Smith racing in the Keirin and Bell in the 15km Scratch race. This will also be a big day for Julia Bradley, Laura Brown, Steph Roorda and Tara Whitten in the 3km Team Pursuit.

The Canadians are not scheduled to race any events on Friday, but the action resumes in full force on Saturday with Whitten in the Omnium events – 200m Time Trial; 5Km Scratch race; 2Km Individual Pursuit; 10Km Points Race; and 500m Time Trial – and Smith in the Sprint competition. The racing concludes on Sunday, March 28 with Sullivan racing the Keirin, Whitten contesting a 25km Points race, and men’s Sprint finals.

The Track Worlds follows on the heels of Canadian success at recent world cups in Cali, Columbia, and Beijing, China. The women’s Pursuit team won gold in Cali where Whitten also collected silver medals in the Points race and Individual Pursuit. Bell returned from Beijing with two gold medals from the Points and Scratch races, the women’s Pursuit team claimed bronze, and Whitten added another bronze medal to her collection in the Individual Pursuit.
