June 24, 2010 (Newmarket, ON) – Saturday, June 19 proved to be a fantastic day of racing as the fourth annual Tour of Speed, a mainstay on the Ontario Youth Cup Road Series, took place in Newmarket. With 55 young athletes looking to take to the course, it was sure to be an exciting day.

The day started out with the Squirt and Peewee category time trials. For some of these young participants, this would be their first Time Trial ever and some of the nerves showed early on (as did a brief sprinkling of rain). The squirt boys and girls time trial’s were won by Campbell Lee (St. Catharines CC) & Tove Schaefer (Esteem Cycling Club) respectively while Tove’s brother Rune (EsteemTraining.com) & teammate Charlotte Creswicke were able to capture 1st place in the Peewee Time Trials.

The Minime Girls TT saw Claudia Newdick (The Hub Race Team) take the points lead heading into the Road Race while Team Hardwood Cycling and Ski Club’s Adam Jamieson was able to capture the Minime Boys TT win. Jamie White of the hometown Newmarket Eagles had a very strong performance in the TT which helped her take the Cadet Girl’s 1st place while a strong push in the last 250m helped Adrian Gavrilov (Independent) take top spot in the Cadet Boys TT over Invita-FCV rider Adrian George.

The Road Races began shortly after the last TT ended and once again the squirt categories saw Campbell Lee & Tove Schaefer take top spot. For each, it was their second consecutive Ontario Youth Cup Series race win (both captured top spot at Barrie in May). Not to be outdone, Charlotte Creswicke of EsteemTraining.com gutted out a hard fought win in the Peewee Girls race, holding off a strong push from Finley Adams in the last 150m. A photo finish was needed in the Peewee Boys race as Esteem teammates Rune Schaefer and Zachary Peddle both broke away in the last 50m and pushed side by side right to the finish line. An excited crowd looked on as Zach edged out his teammate at the line to capture the race win and the overall day’s top spot.

The last races of the day saw the Minime Boys and Girls and the Cadet Boys and Girls take to the road. The anticipation of these races was so much that you knew there was going to be some fantastic racing going on. The Minime race saw a group of 3 break away from the pack as Adam Jamieson, Tyler Lee (St. Catharines CC) and Mark Gavrilov (Ind.) opened up a 30 second lead on the rest of the field and never looked back. As the race started to wind down, Jamieson opened up a small gap on Lee that would be too much to overcome as the Team Hardwood rider captured the Road Race title and the overall category win for the day. The second place result however was good enough to vault Tyler into first place in the series standings heading into Le Tour de Terra Cotta Youth Race (August 2) while his brother Brady sits second in the series standings after the Tour of Speed).

The Minime Girls race saw a two rider battle as Farleigh Creswicke and Claudia Newdick battled throughout with each girl at the front on numerous occasions. In the end it was Newdick who captured the victory by 5 seconds over Farleigh Creswicke with the host Newmarket Eagles’ Jenna Tuero finishing third.

Finally the Cadet Boys and Girls again saw plenty of tight racing. Throughout, each of these two groups was relatively close and no one seemed to be able to break away. In the Cadet Girls race it came down to Jaimie White (Newmarket Eagles) and Kristin Brooks (Team Hardwood) and White was able to gain enough of a gap on Brooks to take the victory with Saskia Kowalchuk (National Cycling Centre Hamilton) capturing third.


The Cadet Boys also saw a back and forth battle throughout. Some strong riding from many of these riders made this a very exciting race from start to finish. The end result was a strong finishing lap by Adrian George (Invita-FCV) propelling him into the lead and the victory with Alex Newdick and Nathan Parcels (Ind.) rounding out the top 3 in the race.
