September 30, 2010 (Geelong, Australia) – The Espoir men’s road race is now underway here in Geelong Australia. It’s overcast and rains are threatening to come down later in the race. There are 122 riders on the start line who will contest 10 laps of a 15.9km circuit for a total of 159km.
We caught up with CCA road cycling coach Vincent Jourdain minutes before the start for his thoughts on today’s race. He expects the Columbian riders to split the field open on the two steep climbs early in the race then be chased back by other teams later on the straight downhill and windy sections.
Canada has four riders, all from la Belle Provence, starting today’s race including David Boiley, Guillaume Boivin, Hugo Houle and Arnaud Papillon. Boivin is the team’s strong option if race stays together and ends in a bunch sprint while Boiley is the big hope to get into a late race break.
Jourdain sees the French team as the strongest in the peloton with Johan Le Bon their top rider. Other contenders showing recent form are John Degenkold of Germany having won two stages at the Tour of L’Avenir and the American duo of Ben King and Taylor Phinney – start list here.
Lap 1
There was a crash after only three km – American Conor Jones and a Slovenian rider went down. Ben King (USA) of Trek Livestrong was off the front solo at the start and was pursued by Ben King of Australia at 55 sec and the peloton behind. All Canadians are in the main field.
Lap 3
The USA’s King is still leading and with Australia’s King at 1:15 with the peloton at 4 min.
Sorry we had technical problems.
