March 26, 2009 (Pruskow, Poland) – USA phenom Taylor Phinney won the men’s 4000m Individual Pursuit title on Day 2 over Jack Bobridge from Australia taking the silver while Dominique Cornu (Belgium) won the bronze. Phinney had the fastest qualification time of 4:15.160 beating his current U.S. national record of 4:15.223 which he set in Feb. at the final Track World Cup in Copenhagen.
Canada’s Zach Bell placed 16th in the men’s Scratch race, an event which he won in Cali, Columbia at round #3 of the Track World Cup. Morgan Kneisky (France) took the title over Argentina’s Angel Dario Colla in second and Andreas Mueller of Austria in 3rd. Mark Cavendish (Great Britain) of Team Columbia-Highroad fame apparently was a marked man and finished 7th.
Canada’s Travis Smith finished third in his heat at Round 1 of the men’s Keirin, just one spot shy of advancing to the next round. Germany’s Maximilian Levy won the gold over François Pervis (France) with the Netherlands top rider Teun Mulder winning the bronze.
Australia’s Kaarle Mcculloch and Anna Meares won the final in the women’s Team Sprint competition while Great Britain’s powerhouse women’s Team Pursuit squad of Elizabeth Armitstead, Wendy Houvenaghel and Joanna Rowsell brought home the gold.
