August 28, 2009 (Burnaby, BC) – The opening day of 2009 Track Nationals saw some new champions crowned and some familiar faces on the podium. Charley Vives qualified fastest in the men’s elite individual pursuit and then bested his Quebec team mate David Boily in the final to take the gold.
Kevin Thorpe did the same to his team mate Jacob Schwingboth both from Cycling BC in the Jr men’s individual pursuit. Upgraded cadet Alex Cataford (Ontario) put in a solid qualifying and final to take bronze. Lots to hear from Alex in the future.
The women were sprinting on Day one as well with Alberta’s Monique Sullivan capturing gold in the elite over Karine Cote with Amy Biskaborn taking bronze. Krista Ruby won the Junior women’s sprint over Flo Laplante-Lamarsh.
There was a bit of an upset in the elite men’s team sprint with Canada 2 taking it over Canada 1 in the final. Canada 2 was made up of upgraded junior riders Scott Mulder and Allan Leparskas and National Team veteran Travis Smith. Canada 1 was Laurence Leroux, Stephane Cossette, and Joe Veloce. Alberta took the bronze. In the Junior men’s it was BC 1 taking gold with Schwingboth, Curtis Jung, and Boris Martin – the silver went to Quebec and bronze to BC 2.
Racing continues on Friday with men’s Scratch races, Team Pursuits for men and women, men’s Keirin, and women’s Pursuit.
