July 2, 2009 (Beauce, QC) – Last week, the first half of the Canadian Road Championships was held in Ste-Georges de-Beauce. Cyclists in the elite category, which also includes a subcategory for those under 23, competed for the national championship titles. Starting this Thursday, July 2, it will be the turn for the junior, masters and paracyclists categories to show their skills.
The second segment of these Canadian Championships will kickoff Thursday with the time trial events. As for the road races, the masters will be run Friday, followed on Saturday by those in the junior and para-cyclist categories. Criterium races in the masters and junior categories will be presented Sunday, to close the event.
Athletes to watch include Antoine Dechesne, who won the Grand Prix de Charlevoix and had the best performance of a junior at the Défi Devinci. Another junior of note, but this time a woman, will be Adrianne Provost, who won the junior time trials in 2008, when she was of cadet age. Among the para-cyclists, the paralympians Jean Quévillon (CP 3-4) and Rico Morneau (handcycling) are favourites in their respective categories. Lastly the tandem team of Daniel Chalifour and Alexandre Cloutier should also perform well.
