2009 Road Nationals Junior Men/Women ITT Report, Full Results, Photos

by Luc Arseneau

July 2, 2009 (St-Georges de Beauce, QC) – It did not seem like the rain, which was getting heavier, had any affect on the new junior men’s national time trial champion. Antoine Duchesne (QC) Equipe du Quebec simply flew over the St-Georges de Beauce 20km course. Being the last one to depart, everyone was on their toes awaiting his arrival.

It was Stuart Wight, from the Atlantic Cycling Centre, who took an early lead recording a sub 29-minute time of 28:47. For a long time the first year junior held the hot seat at the event. “I was a bit nervous. It’s a great position to be holding in your first year as a junior. I knew some strong guys were yet to come, and we never knew what to expect every time another rider would cross the line,” commented Wight.

His lead held until Ontario rider Matteo Dal-Cin (Team Ontario) came in with a new best time of 28:48. A few minutes later, the commentator caught the attention of the crowd by announcing that Antoine Duchesne (Team Quebec) had actually passed the halfway point with a lead of almost a minute!

One by one Duchesne was catching up his minute men. Everyone knew the time would be fast, and it was – 27:55 – 52 seconds over second place.

On the women’s side, the race was also very interesting offered a different perspective than the usual scenario of the big provinces dominating. Two of the top three spots were taken by riders from the Prairie provinces.

Saskatchewan’s Julie Garnet took gold with a time of 32:27. Just like in the junior men’s competition she dominated winning by almost 40 seconds over second-place rider Adriane Provost of Team Quebec. Manitoba’s Karlee Gendron took home the bronze medal with a final time of 33:52.

“I am very happy about this medal. I’ve worked very hard and everything seemed to fall into place well today,” commented Gendron who will represent Manitoba at the Canada Games later this summer.

The junior men and women are off tomorrow and will resume competition on Saturday for the road races. The junior men will complete four laps of the 28.5 km course for 114km, while the women will complete three laps for a total of 85.5 km.
