report by the CCA

July 5, 2009 (St-Georges de Beauce, QC) – Jean Samuel Deshaies (QC) Équipe du Québec and Anne-Marie B. Morin (QC) Équipe du Québec won the 2009 National Challenge Criterium on Sunday as the Road Nationals wrapped up. Deshaies took the Junior men’s 36-lap race (1.2km course) in 1:04:10 while B. Morin scored in the women’s 25-lap race with a time of 53:10.

CCA Crit Report
Jean-Samuel Deshaies and Pierrick Naud, both from Quebec, took first and second place respectively in the criterium event that concluded the Canadian Championships being held in the Beauce.

From the beginning of the junior race, the two riders let their intentions be known by breaking away from the pack. Two others were quick to imitate and joined the leaders. Several others tried in vain to follow. The quartet, made up of three Quebec cyclists, maintained their lead over the main group. At the end, Deshaies was the fastest, followed by Naud. Ontarian Andrew Lattimore nosed out Antoine Duchesne at the finish line.

“I suffered two flats yesterday during the road race. That’s why I really wanted to win”, explained the new Canadian champion.

“The guy from Ontario wouldn’t take his turn so we tried to lose him, but it didn’t work. So it came down to the sprint. I was confident to win, and that’s what happened”, he added.

If the men were traveling at a lightening pace, the women adopted a more leisurely one. Spectator had to wait until the last six laps to see any action. It was Anne-Marie B. Morin who decided to make a solo move, all the way to the finish line. Katie Spittlehouse won the sprint of the pack over Florence Laplante-Lamarche.

“Yesterday, I didn’t have a great race. I was counting on coming back today. Because nothing much was happening, I told myself I had to create some opportunities. I really didn’t want it to come down to the sprint. I decided to try something because I had nothing to lose”, said Morin, wearing a beautiful smile, and obviously thrilled with the outcome of the race.
