July 19, 2009 (Ottawa, ON) – Here are the full from the 2009 Ontario Criterium Championships presented by BRO BikeRace Ottawa, Ontario Cup #7, in Ottawa Ontario on Sunday, July 19. Juliana Gilgen (Beaches Cycling Club) and Jean-Sebastien Perron (Volkswagen-Specialized) were the Elite women’s and men’s winners.

Race Report

At last, a sunny dry day, our first in quite some time. No white knuckle riding wondering if your tires would take you through each turn. A strong head wind into the most difficult turn kept the speed under control.

The course was a technical 1.2 km circuit which included a very short right/left chicane followed by a big ring out of the saddle 120m 8% climb. If your speed got scrubbed in the chicane, you had to work to get up the climb. There was very little time anywhere on the course to recover and a gap between riders often led to losing the pack.

In the Elite Men’s /U-23 race, an early break by Jean-Sebastien Perron (Volkswagen/Specialized), Otavio Bulgarelli (Garneau-Club Chaussures-Ogilvy), and Hugo Houle (Garneau-Club Chaussures-Ogilvy), got away in the 75-minute event and slowly built their lead to 50 sec.

With about 15 minutes to go, the pack tried to pull them back led by 2009 Canadian Road Champion Aaron Fillion (Ride With Rendall). The gap shrunk to only seven seconds but the pack hesitated and that was the race. The Garneau riders tried to tag team Perron but it came down to a sprint between Perron and Bulgarelli, with Perron taking the race and the Allen Large Memorial trophy for the second year in a row.
